We at The Studio Formerly Known as LM/NL are doing our Spring cleaning a little early. Say hey to lm/nl (pronounced ‘lim-i-nal). We’re still the same bunch of reality distorting game developers we’ve always been, just with a fresh coat of paint.

Why the name change?

Our ambition is to create experiences that warp the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds across a variety of settings. While our heritage has been in shoot-’em-up and make-ya-dizzy arcade-style games, we’re branching out into a variety of different worlds and wanted a name that would sit just as comfortably when presenting a haptic feedback-enhanced pony simulator (no, we’re not currently making that, but please call if you’re interested) or fitness program as it might a core game.

So there you have it. We’re excited to have you join us on this next phase of development!

In late September, LM/NL CEO and creative director Josh Shabtai traveled to InsideAR 2011, hosted by augmented reality platform leader Metaio, to deliver a keynote about the impact gaming will continue to have on the AR industry. In short, gaming is blurring the boundaries between digital and physical, reality and fiction and engaging the mass market in ways that no other medium can come close to. Without it, augmented reality will be facing an uphill battle for consumer adoption. Watch the full video below.

Hot off the heels of Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, which pushed the boundaries of augmented reality gameplay, we’re psyched to announce LM/NL’s next foray into immersive gaming: my3D Sector 17 and my3D Teleport: LA, the first 360-degree, stereoscopic 3D experiences for iOS.

Partnering with Hasbro, LM/NL built these two titles exclusively for my3D, the toymaker’s much-buzzed-about 3D viewer for iPhone and iPod Touch. While it’s earned comparisons to the classic Viewmaster toy, we see my3D as something much more significant: mass market virtual reality.

Built atop the LM/NL Immersion Engine, these two titles push the limits of immersive VR gaming.

my3D Sector 17 is a hyperactive space adventure that throws you into the middle of an epic, intergalactic war. You’ll do battle across all three axes in rich stereoscopic 3D.

my3D Teleport: LA is a virtual tour experience that drops you into a variety of tourist destinations scattered throughout Los Angeles. Coupled with 360-degree sound and motion control, the stereoscopic 3D confuses the senses and makes you feel like you’re really there.

Star Wars and video games go hand-in-hand. There is a long line of Star Wars-themed games going back to the days of arcade games, and continuing through home console and mobile games. Now, the first augmented reality Star Wars game for the iPhone just hit the app store. It is called Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner ($4.99, iTunes link).

The game starts with the scene from the original Star Wars inside the Millennium Falcon after they escape the Death Star and the TIE Fighters attack. You are Luke Skywalker in the gunner’s turret below, and you turn the iPhone to rotate around and shoot the attacking TIE Fighters while Han Solo and Princess Leah either encourage or heckle you depending on your skills. (“Let me guess, you are trying not to hit anyone.”) In the 360-degree background is the Death Star and an earth-like planet, which come into view depending on which way you turn. The game is completely immersive, and works especially well while sitting in a swivel office chair.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, developed by LM/NL Games and published by THQ Wireless, takes your surroundings and sticks them outside Han Solo’s crosshairs. Whether it’s the New York skyline or an IHOP parking lot, you’ll be able to blast TIE Fighters out of the sky as if they were invading right now, in a galaxy really, really close. The game will also feature other iconic moments from the Star Wars universe—the escape from the Death Star, the Battle of Hoth—with the option of switching between rendered backgrounds and AR scenery from your device’s camera.

Calling the LM/NL Immersion Engine a ‘technology platform’ doesn’t quite capture what it does.

Think of it as a window into another world.

LM/NL Games’ built-from-the-ground-up engine fuses a number of innovative technologies to create game experiences that immerse players in another reality.

Multi-Axis Motion Control: Using a mobile device’s sensors LM/NL Immersion Engine tracks a player’s movement across X-, Y- and Z-axes to enable the next generation of full-body motion control.

AlmostThere 3D Graphic Engine: Baked into the engine is a high-end graphics rendering and compression system that maximizes device performance while serving up visuals that appear to be pulled from a high-end home console. Coupled with a revolutionary system for capturing and rendering panoramic images, the LM/NL Immersion Engine is capable of serving console-quality imagery on a mobile device with no drain on overall performance.

360-Degree Sound: While total immersion begins with controls and graphics, it’s the sound that seals it. The LM/NL Immersion Engine’s 3D sound processor is frighteningly real. Wear headphones.

Augmented Reality Camera Overlay and Location Awareness: Bringing fictional properties into the real world is another powerful way to immerse players in an experience. Our AR technology allows for rendering 3-D objects in real life, all in real-time.
